I haven't taken the compiler course seriously, because I have never found any course more boring than this in the entire computer science. Later I tried to understand some compiler reference because I encountered some interesting papers but intensively related to compiler. It turned out that it is as boring as it is always, and those reference are just like what you described: ESOTERIC! Can't people shorten the length to explain things directly and clearly?
Your post is re-motivating me to make up the compiler, and also I am wondering: do you have any reference book or materials or links to share on compiler?

[...] Embedded in Academia : Why Take a Compiler Course? - Seconded, or whatever - my compiler course was briefer than I'd have liked but many of my peers didn't take it and I spent ages explaining what I thought where simple concepts to them when working on group projects and the like.
